Truck, traffic grind to halt

The driver of a BC Hydro truck was lucky to escape without injury when the truck lost its rear axle and rolled into a South Island Highway ditch Wednesday afternoon.

The incident (shown at right) snarled afternoon traffic for a few hours.

Campbell River RCMP say the accident was reported just before 3 p.m. when the rear axle tore off the southbound truck between Barlow and Dahl roads. The truck slammed into the ditch on the west side of the highway and spun around before coming to rest on its side in the ditch facing north. The rear axle and wheels came to a stop nearby, while the drive shaft was several metres back up the road.

Marks in the pavement and a witness account suggest the universal joint at the front of the drive shaft failed as the truck headed down the highway. The drive shaft dropped and dug into the pavement, throwing the back end of the truck into the air and tearing the axle from the vehicle.

Police, fire, ambulance and BC Hydro crews responded. The highway was first closed to a single lane and later closed altogether.

"The highway was closed for an extensive period of time to complete the investigation and get the vehicle out of the ditch," said RCMP Cpl. Brian Brown.

The truck was obviously more difficult to haul away without its rear wheels.

Fire crews worked to clean up engine fluids and the fuel tanks were pumped out before the truck was moved.

The highway was still down after 5 p.m., causing line-ups on the highway, as well as along detour routes like Erickson Road, Dogwood Street and the Jubilee Parkway.
