Come rain or shine, the Blue Pavilion at SED is an area that just cannot be missed for those seeking anything from engine spares to valves and computer software. More than 100 exhibitors provide visitors with an insight into the products and developments that help to keep the construction industry in the front line of technology.
Electronics and software
SED show newcomer, InspHire plans to demonstrate its new CRM [customer relations manager] package, which, it says, has been developed specifically for the hire industry. A system that integrates with the company's range of hire management software products, it is designed to help hire firms access the latest technology and help boost profit.
The Hiremate system from Iris Software will also be on show. Said to be suitable for any type of business operating a hire/rental operation, the system helps to keep track of assets or hired-in equipment.
From Famic Technologies comes news of Version 5.6 of Automation Studio - a software solution for increased engineering productivity. Designed to be used by engineers in a variety of fields, it uses simulation techniques to bring designs to life - mobile hydraulic systems, for example, can be tested before a prototype is built.
Hydraulics
Hydraulic systems feature on the majority of machines used in the industry. System specialist Argo-Hytos will display a range of standard and customised products, including manifold systems and hydraulic power units.
Hydraulic hose and coupling company Gates not only offers a range of hoses and couplings, but also assembly machines and dies, along with optimal crimp data. At SED it will showcase its new range of self-assembly machinery for attaching hose ends, which the company says are maintenance-free and cost competitive.
Holmbury plans to launch its new H and HQ Series of high-performance flat-face couplings which, when compared with their predecessors, are said to have an improved factor of safety pressure ratings and flow resistance. The initial size band will offer 10mm, 12mm and 19mm versions, with seven extra sizes due to be phased in later this year.
Safety
Border Barrier Systems' new Rhino Barrier is designed to be durable and versatile and is said to be suitable for a number of applications. Approved to test level EN1317-N, its height can be extended to 2.4m by adding extra panels.
Fleet Electrical & Safety Direct has a couple of new developments at this year's show. The Equaliser Alarm is designed to create sounds that can cancel out noises produced by machines and is said to be ideal for use in built-up environments. Also on show will be the Sideminder, a warning system for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users for when a truck is about to turn left. It is activated when the vehicle's left indicator is turned on and a recorded message is delivered from three loudspeakers along the side of the vehicle.
Making a contribution to improving working conditions is Total Protection, which is focusing on noise monitoring and the latest range of hearing protection from specialist manufacturer Mine Safety Appliances. The company is also set to display the latest developments in dust monitoring.
For maximum output, areas of work frequently need to be illuminated and Hella will display its latest range of lights, including halogen single and double-bulb reflectors, plus the new low-energy LED products.
Warning beacons and safety reversing equipment manufacturer LAP Electrical will be launching several new items - products that will make work vehicles even safer, it claims. Full details on its stand.
SED's fuel supplier Crown Oil plans to launch its Fuel Kit at the event. This comprises a 205-litre barrel of diesel fuel, a two-barrel capacity drip tray, a spill kit and a barrel pump - all of which will be available nationwide and, says the company, ensure its clients comply with health and safety regulations.
Cutting gear
Butters AMT claims to offer one of the largest ranges of equipment for cutting or welding of materials. The company provides single and three-phase versions of welding and plasma cutting machines, with the capacity to cut material up to 50mm thick.
SED will see the company displaying and demonstrating MMA, MUG and TIG welders, plasma cutting equipment and portable line-boring equipment - many for demo on request.
Vimpex has been appointed European distributor for the Ogura range of hydraulic metal-cutting and bending equipment and will give SED visitors an opportunity to see this equipment in action.
The Ogura range includes mains and battery-powered cutters able to slice up to 20m rebar, plus bar benders and metal hole punchers that can cut holes in material up to 20mm thick, says Vimpex.
Security
Following a successful show last year Camwatch is back at SED 2008. The company, which claims to be Europe's largest CCTV monitoring business, is responsible for 200,000 cameras in the UK. The Camwatch Tower, complete with camera, speaker system and number-plate recognition, could turn a few heads at this year's show.
Vehicle tracking specialist Tracker Network UK says that, to date, it has helped to recover stolen vehicles worth more than £350m in total. With such an impressive record, a visit to the company's stand to see how its system works - and how it could help to recover your vehicles should they be stolen - could be worthwhile.
Recruitment and training
Exhibitors in the Blue Pavilion can also help address long-standing industry issues such as training and recruiting workers.
Carillion Construction Training offers NVQ training and assessment in all construction trades and offers to help unravel the minefield of whether funding is available to put staff through relevant training programmes.
A visit to the 4URecruitment stand will be an opportunity to discover how this specialist provider of operators for crane and heavy plant machinery could help your business.
Are your red Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) cards due to expire, is the question Citrus Training is asking visitors. It can advise on upgrading to the blue card, including matters relating to the NVQ process, along with courses for crane appointed persons/supervisors, confined spaces, site safety and many others. Both Citrus and ConstructionSkills (which has a stand in the Truck Zone) can provide visitors with information about the changes to the CPCS scheme that take effect in August.
Engineering
Bailey Morris specialises in propshaft manufacture for a range of applications, be it for constructing a one-off special, or sourcing a hard-to-find replacement for an existing machine. And if it's a new seat that's required, a visit to the Be-Ge stand could be a rewarding experience - the company makes seats for vehicle manufacturers such as Scania, Volvo, and Kalmar.
SED's Blue Pavilion is where you can see the widest variety of products - from engine spares to survey equipment, and from hydraulic valves to computer software. Andy Collings takes a look.
The London Best Practice Guide will require construction equipment over 37kW on some of the biggest sites to be fitted with a diesel particulate filter. Pavilion exhibitor Cawdell claims to offer the widest exhaust purification product and service portfolio for the industry and says it can manage this requirement from an individual machine basis through an entire site.
For those fleet managers who want to monitor the condition of engine oil, IPU is launching a new oil cleaning and condition monitoring package called SafeGuard. It says the service provides a cost-effective solution to engine oil contamination, on-site servicing and waste oil disposal.
Air-Seal Products is a long-time Blue Pavilion exhibitor, but the enduring shortage of large earthmoving tyres means its products are more relevant than ever. The company provides a range of tyre sealants to prevent punctures up to 30mm and eliminate those annoying slow leaks.
Al-Ko Kober, manufacturer of running gear and chassis for portable plant and plant-moving trailers, will be demonstrating its ATC System, which automatically brakes the chassis in critical circumstances. It will also exhibit the AL-KO Secure wheel lock system for 14in steel rims, which carries the 'sold secure' diamond accreditation.
