Plumbing Curse

Well lately I think the plumbing gods have been after me. It started a few weeks ago with a frozen line in the washer/dryer closet. This line has frozen a few times over the past 8 years and I thought I had enough insulation around it to clear the problem. However, we were gone for 10 days and it was minus 40 plus so it froze. Being an exceptionally bright guy I decided to put a connector in the line so if it freezes up again I would simply disconnect the line and feed my thaw bottle line in, unthaw it and hook it back together. Unfortunately I did not think about hooking a plastic connector in a HOT water line. Rayann soon discovered water running on the floor and once again I took the line apart (it had basically come apart due to the hot water running through it. This time I put in a brass connector. The next day Rayann is frantically waving out the door to come to the house...water is running out by the washer again...sheesh! So, I take the cover off the wall only to find out there is no leak in the lines. Must be the washer. Hook the washer back up and turn on the water..nothing leaking..hmmm...so I grab the water lines that go to the washer and sure enough the cold water connector is leaking.

I replace the washer on both lines. Awesome..good to go...not really. I am just going to sit down that night and watch TV when I swear I can hear water running. Back to the washer/dryer closet and fling open the doors...nothing on the floor...hmmm...wouldn't you know it the hot water connector has loosened and fortunately the water is draining down the drain...tighten it up and we are good to go. Yesterday the kitchen sink plugged up and after 2 bottles of drano I went to the plumber and got a snake to clean out the pipes. Well, I spent about 4 hours under the sink and couldn't get the lines cleared and actually had to rebuild half the drain pipe setup. Today when I crawled out of bed I said to Rayann "time to phone the plumber". About 9:30 the plumber show up and start to work. I head to town to have coffee and get some water and about 2 hours later my phone rings...Les it is Steve the plumber, I can't get the line cleared, I think we will have to go in underneath the house and cut the line. I will be right home I tell him. I arrive home only to find out he had decided to go under the house to cut the line...only problem is the house is sealed underneath and he would have had to remove the plywood and insulation. Rayann (she should have called me first) told him where the deck access was.

Now normally that would not matter but there is snow piled 8 feet high beside the deck. He had shovelled a path 3 feet wide 8 feet deep and about half the length of the deck to get to the access only to find out the underside of the house is sealed. I could have told him that if Rayann would have phoned me and saved him about an hour of shovelling. So he continues to try and clear the line. Whak whak whak goes his electric snake and bang...the end breaks off inside the pipe. So, he heads back to town to get more help and I go to the shop and bring in my flexible magnet. Fortunately, I am able to retrive the broken end from inside the pipe. After lunch he brings a second plumber with him. They start feeding a new snake down the pipe and inform me after about half an hour they are 16 feet into the pipe...can' be I tell them, the sink pipe is only 3 feet max from the sewer pipe..that doesn't make sense and the water is still not draining. He tries again and this time we hear the end of the snake turning inside the outside wall of the house. That means the snake is in the vent pipe. Well that is not possible. One plumber goes up on the roof, looks down the vent pipe with a flashlight and sure enough there is the sewer snake. How can that be....let me tell you how that can be!!! 8 years ago when the house was built the contractor left 2 pipes sticking out of the kitchen floor, one to the vent and one to the sewer line. Once the cabinets were installed and he hooked up the lines he put the disposal lines into the vent and the vent line into the sewer line. So, everytime the water drained from the sink or dishwasher it actually went into the vent pipe until it got even with the bottom of the sink and then it ran back over into the sewer pipe. That explains why the water has always drained so slow for the past 8 years. So, they rerouted the lines, filled the sink with water and pulled the plug and it drained in about 5 seconds, the way it is supposed to. They took a shop vac and sucked out egg shells and crap from the vent pipe and we are good to go...unbelievable...almost...is it something that could only happen to us...probably! What next...stay tuned for my next blog on my luggage from the Venetian...ever hear of Hish Larel Alberta...me either!!! Time to head to Boston Pizza lounge!!!!
