Plans had been discussed since the 1980s to renovate and rebuild the Fore River Bridge, a bascule that dated to 1936. Then, about seven years ago, engineers determined that it had deteriorated so much that it was beyond repair. As an interim solution, MassHighway erected the temporary bridge, a $60 million, four-lane span designed to last 15 years.

The towering structure - which, with its 10,000 panel pins and 60,000 structural bolts, has the look of a large Erector Set project - took about five years to complete, from design to finish. CRP therefore decided to develop new materials for sintering rapid casting patterns, and partnered with DTM in 1998 to be the first to use rapid casting for hard to cast shapes such as F1 uprights and gearboxes, and alloys such as titanium. They say they were first to optimise a polystyrene material for laser sintered patterns, known as Castform.

That year, CRP also began to optimise the engineering process and the manufacturing process, studying titanium rapid casting, based on the combination of rapid prototyping (RP) technology, to manufacture the disposable pattern, and investment casting technology (lost wax casting) with titanium alloys.

Five Hamilton High School students are learning welding this last quarter of school at Keokuk Steel Castings. Two days a week, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, the juniors and seniors are gearing up in protective clothing, donning welding helmets, face guards, respiratory masks and leather aprons to melt metal with a stick of fire.

Four Steel Castings welders, all volunteers, are instructing and overseeing the students as they work in five of the 24 welding booths at the Steel Castings plant on Main Street in Keokuk.

NBK, Inc. announced a new low profile, high precision, linear stage model LT190-EDLM. Manufactured from high strength aluminum, the table is driven by an ironless core linear motor with travel ranging from 150 mm to 500 mm. Total table height is only 50 mm. Positioning accuracy, repeatability and maximum speed depend on which one of three high precision encoders is included. Typical speed is 1 m/sec with acceleration of several Gs. The stage is designed so that two units may be mounted together directly without an additional interface plate creating a low profile XY configuration (see photo). Together with a rugged right angle bracket, a three axis XYZ arrangement is also available. Features of this new table include:

Protection is provided against both particle and moisture contamination, enabling the bearings to offer effective performance over long, virtually maintenance-free service lives. As the bearings do not require external seals in all but the most aggressive environments, installation is simplified considerably, thereby reducing downtime and costs.

The bearings are pre-lubricated prior to sealing, so there are no lubrication requirements in most cases for the life of the bearings, which lowers maintenance costs still further. Additionally, in being fully sealed, the bearings eliminate the risk of lubricant leakage that is associated with conventional open bearings, minimising their environmental impact.

An accompanying editorial describes an illustrative incident in which a patients brooch, worn on her blouse, inactivated her ICD for an extended period, until the blouse was removed and a magnet in the jewelry discovered. In the present study, small neodymium–iron–boron magnets had a high likelihood of causing pacemaker and ICD interference at distances up to 3 cm. The authors note that magnets larger than those tested are likely to be risky at greater distances. For ICD wearers in particular, magnetic interference could mean the devices failure to detect a life-threatening arrhythmia and to deliver life-saving therapy. Physicians should discuss with their patients who have pacemakers and ICDs the risks from increasingly common NdFeB magnets.
